Are you hearing the word NaNoWriMo more and more frequently? Is it accompanied with an exclamation mark? Uttered with a sigh? Said with excitement? Personally I am in. And for those who are participants I am a mix of a planster and Old School Wrimo and I am already thinking about what NaNoWriMo gift I will be giving to my mentor about mid November.
What Is NaNoWriMo ?
NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. It’s a marathon of creativity for the month of November with the goal of writing a novel in a month of 50,000 words. For those just beginning to reach for the calculator that is 1,666 words a day or 12,500 words a weekend or however you manage to reach the magical 50,000 words by the end of the month.
The intent of NaNoWriMo is to energize writers of all genres to start and finish a novel in 30 days. Yes, the novel so many have rumbling around in their heads or outlined on a napkin or hidden on their tablet.
It is a formidable effort. It can be a formidable task. It is just … formidable.
You don’t need to understand why anyone would take NaNoWriMo on, but only to understand they need your support! Writing is a solo sport and not only will you be missing the writer in your life who has mysteriously disappeared with the hopes of returning to life on December lst; a little gift basket of writer goodies will brighten their spirits and who knows he or she NaNoWriMo may finish in time for Thanksgiving turkey.
Gifts For Your NaNoWriMo Writer
Okay so they probably not finish in time for turkey but this is the time to help your favorite writer complete a project very dear to their hearts. I’ve assembled a few writer NaNoWriMo gifts I know I’d love to receive and I know the writer in your life will be very appreciative of your efforts. Assemble in a basket a few gifts writers of all genres will appreciate and will certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness as the month progresses.
Humor And NaNoWriMo Gifts
I have already mentioned fortitude and with fortitude one needs a healthy dash of humor. The saying on these mugs will bring a chuckle and giggle to your favorite writer (and don’t forget to include the K cups!) Available in styles with She or He.
The Reference Book NaNoWriMo Gifts
- There is a reason On Writing Well by William Zinsser continues to be on the must have writing class list. Published in 1976 this is a classic any fiction or non fiction writer can reread throughout their career. Why would I want another copy? Because my current copy has been read so many times a fresh copy is always appreciated.
- William Strunk Jr.’s Elements Of Style is essential for grammar, style and punctuation. The gold standard for grammar, punctuation and style. Buy two copies and keep one for your library as this timeless classic is now in its’ fourth edition and invaluable.
- This recommendation is perhaps niche for the nonfiction writer, but there is value for the nonfiction and fiction writer as one never knows when writing in AP Style is required for employment. A book they would be happy to own, but may not want to spend the funds for is the 2016 Associated Press Stylebook. This is an invaluable addition to any writers’ library and is updated annually.
